PAST EVENTS

New Madrid Seismic Zone Conference: Preparing for a Significant Central U.S. Earthquake
This conference provided a regional forum for the presentation, exchange of ideas, and potential solutions involved with preparing for a significant central U.S. earthquake. The conference opened communication with academia, government, non-government agencies and the private sectors to address the current and forecasted needs of the response and recovery community.

Visit http://conference.mst.edu/newmadridconf for more information. Click here to view the conference poster.

6th International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering
Professionals from 30 or more countries around the world participated in the conference and presented their research findings. The exchange of information during the conference will advance the state of the art and practice in several areas and will give definitive direction to future work.

Visit http://campus.mst.edu/6icchge/index.html for more information.

6th National Seismic Conference on Bridges & Highways - Seismic Technologies for Extreme Loads
The technical program featured over 75 technical presentations and keynote speakers from around the world. Two “best paper” awards were presented. The conference included a student design competition, a poster session, an awards luncheon, and an optional boat tour of Charleston harbor and the recently completed Arthur Ravenel Jr. (Cooper River) Bridge. There was a pre-conference workshop on Sunday. Also, a technical exhibition where engineers and managers were able to talk personally with company representatives about the latest technology, products and services in the field was held.

GeoMO 2008 Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering Site Response
The theme of GeoMO 2008 recently became of more interest to the Midwest civil engineering community due to perceived earthquake risks and new code requirements. The recent Illinois earthquake, constant seismic reminder for the New Madrid Seismic Zone and new USGS hazard mapping underway in St. Louis made this lecture very timely. The short course provided answers to questions that frequently arise in new or retrofit engineering projects as they relate to site response.

Applications of Advanced Technology in Transportation

Transportation professionals from around the world and from public and private sectors' engineering firms, automotive and aerospace companies, transportation agencies, consultants, researchers, and educators' will find this conference an excellent learning forum to: (1) Examine an array of innovative technologies to solve various transportation problems in the areas of infrastructure, operations and planning, and information systems and (2) Discover innovative strategies to address such problems as congestion, safety, security, data collection and management, asset deterioration and management, planning and modeling, and effective implementation of advanced information technologies in the lifecycle of transportation systems.

Papers published in the proceedings will be peer-reviewed and published by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

New Farm Road Bridge 148 - Greene County, MO
The superstructure of Bridge 1480230, located in Greene County, MO, needs to be replaced due to structural and functional inadequacy. The technology applied for the construction of the new deck and guardrail system will combine the corrosion resistance of FRP internal reinforcement with the speed of installation of stay-inplace (SIP) modular FRP forms.

The development and optimization of durable FRP-SIP systems promises to benefit bridge owners by minimizing maintenance costs and reducing disruption of traffic during construction.

The showcase presented the significance of the project and its technical features were illustrated using a full-scale 8' x 24' mock-up of the new superstructure.

Geotechnical and Bridge Seismic Design Workshop: New Madrid Seismic Zone Experience
The main objective was to present a methodology for the geotechnical and structural seismic design of bridge systems in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. This methodology is based on the recent research findings by the Missouri University of Science and TechnologyNatural Hazards Mitigation Institute (study supported by the Federal Highway Administration, the Missouri and Alaska Departments of Transportation, and University Transportation Center). The new methodology addresses the uniqueness of earthquake motions (near fault and directivity), as well as the effects of deep soil stratigraphy on the seismic response in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Participants in the workshop applied this methodology to re-design an existing highway bridge in the vicinity of the New Madrid Seismic Zone. Both retrofit and replacement options were considered.

Advanced Materials and NDT Technologies for the Transportation Infrastructure
The University Transportation Center at UMR organized a Technology Transfer Day on July 22, 2004 at UMR from 10:00am to 4:30pm.The title of the meeting was "Advanced Materials and NDT Technologies for the Transportation Infrastructure" and it was intended for MoDOT personnel, practitioners and contractors. Three hours of technical presentation on the topics of design and construction and three hours of laboratory hands-on demonstration were featured. Qualified attendees received PDH certificates (for 6 PDH's), which were issued at the end of the program.
